Okay. You got me there. My point was (and should have been clearer) that an
amateur painter ought to start with cheap paints b/c a better paint won't
look better if it is a bodged job either in the prep work or the spray job.
Cheaper mistakes with cheaper materials.
Yes the better the paint, the longer it will last - generally.
I think we are looking at paint jobs from different ends of the financial
spectrum. I can't afford the high end paint job - be it the pro prepped and
sprayed job or the best materials applied by myself.
I can afford the medium to cheap materials. If this is the difference
between having new paint or not, then I'll buy the cheaper paint now and
apply it assuming that a delay in addressing the vehicle's paint job will
lead to further deterioration of my vehicle.
Hopefully by the time that this cheaper paint fails hopefully I'll have my
money saved up to do a paint job with fancy materials. In the meantime the
bus is no worse because be it cheap paint or the good stuff I am going to
be sure the vehicle is properly prepped and not going to rust anytime soon.
I'm talking $3K versus $500 paint jobs here.
Yes it is more expensive to do the job twice (price of cheap materials now
+ fancy paint later) but at my place on the food chain, it's what I can
afford, Maybe I won't have the vehicle when the paint fails.
If I could put it off and have the money to do it properly the first time
then I would.
There are ways to get more for your buck - proper self prep (versus paying
somebody to do it for you) and a few coats of cheap paint by yourself or
Maaco. I prefer all of it done by myself.
I recommend anyone to take the time to teach themselves to learn to paint.
Takes time and practice of course. Big savings each time you do a paint job
for yourself.
