The rear heater leaking is common. Can be from the core itself or the valve. If you don't need it, it can be bypassed. Best to check it out soon and hope it hasn't soaked the floor material. The parts are available from list vendors around $70. There can be lots wrong with the A/C. Or maybe just needs to be re-charged. You may also want to think about converting to R134a. The material you describe, I think, is a thin insulating layer to prevent condensation on the duct.

The front blower failure is common and replacement involves removing the dash. Fortunately I haven't had that problem yet.

Are you in Ocean Beach as in San Diego? If so, there used to be a good A/C place out on Market St. Name was International Conditioning Enterprises, Inc., or ICE for short.
