DLL = Dynamic Link Library INI = Initialization File BAT = batch file EXE = executable file COM = Command file

etc, etc......

The limiting factor in the days when these names were chosen was three characters after the period in the file name. Oh how much fun it was to make any file with only eight characters bear any resemblance to what it was supposed to be :-)

Oh how much fun it is to be old......
