The device is designed to run that way, the air inlet is several feet off the ground, and it's the only practical way to use the thing if you're not driving continuously for long periods. And if you *are* driving continously, the battery mode has no thermostat so it will run flat-out even if it's freezing everythign in the box (yeah, I know...real likely. But ask Darrel Boehler about his lettuce). david
