Most people would like to be able to drive their Vanagon into the VW shop (dealer or indie) and not have the technician faint. Also, a VW transplant maintains (or improves) resale value. Most buyers would shy away from a Westy with a Chevy V-8 in it, I think. Also, horsepower vs. transmission longevity. It's a trade-off. One or the other.
