OK.got the motor out without much stress. Had to improvise to hold the tranny up (did not have the special VW part), 2 2x4's running fore/aft and a rope between them holds the tranny now. I think that it will be harder to put back than it was to get out. Questions: 1. I plan on replacing all coolant hoses and fuel lines, and cleaning and paining all else. Do I need a new water pump, or is there a way to check mine? 2. What should I do the tranny now that its "hanging loose" 3. Is it worth replacing the motor mounts, or should I simply reuse them. 4. Still not sure who will do the rebuild, but is there anything else I should be doing now that I have all these pieces on my garage floor?
