The "Golf" comes in different trim levels - "GL, GLS, and GLX - the GTi is not marketed as an "optional" variation on a Golf. Check out http://www.vw.com/build.htm If you select USA, then look at the drop-down, you will see that the GTi is listed as a separate "model" like the Jetta and the Cabrio.
