Walter, I had done some maintenance on my 88 GL and had the airfilter box disconnected and out of the vehicle. Whe I put it back in I failed to hool up the connector to the AFM. When I tried to drive it, it acted just like you described. You might check the connector on yours and ensure a good connection, or even test the leads from the connector.
