It's made in Taiwan by Harada, the leading aftermarket antenna supplier (same brand sold by most autosound stores and FLAPS). Direct replacement except that it doesn't retract completely; still about 8" tall when fully retracted. We sell a couple every day; it's a very popular item for us. Out of hundreds sold I have taken back exactly 2 defectives (both were from the same shipment a year ago, defective right-out-of-the-box with a loose plug on the end of the wire), so their reliability record has been good. My '85 had a two year old one on it when I sold it and it still looked and worked the same as new.
