Deb,

The "resetting" pliers to which you are referring are use to adjust the angular position of the notches in the caliper piston on the '85 Vanagon. These notches have to engage the tabs stamped into the anti-squeal plates. Many different tools can be used or dedicated purpose ones fabricated to do this task. A pair of battery terminal pliers should work.
