I think mfg dates have to be around August or September to be

5xx = 5-cylinder compressor. 7xx = 7-cylinder. 08 or 09 (or whatever)
= cu. in. displacement, IIRC. Mounting (bolt patterns) is identical,
I believe. This is why the 7xx is considered a direct replacement for
the 08 (backward compatibility).

Note, however, that Sanden compressors came with a plethora of
fittings for connecting the A/C lines. You might be able to upgrade
an old 5xx with a 7xx by looking in the recycle yards. Volvo
850-series and some Jeeps (and many others I'm not aware of) used the
Sanden brand.
