The retaining rod on the left valve cover (on my rusty/dirty engine here
in Michigan) was rusted in place and when I went to change gaskets it
broke off where it contacts the head in the hole. I had to spray and dig
with a pick slowly at the hole to remove the nubs that were left. Then I
wire brushed a hole into one of the valve covers in preparation for
painting. That's when I ordered a new set of covers and retainers which
is what I should have done to start with.
