Greetings again fellow Vanagon owners,

Progress on my van is moving forward at an acceptable
rate.  Replacing this, repairing that, and sanding
every square inch of rust hoping to find enough
remaining metal on the van to weigh a few grams.

However, there are some wrinkles on this old girl that
I am considering in a new light.  I need cables to
actuate the dash vents, heat exchanger boxes, etc.
The rear blower motor is dead and I now have a gap in
my heater lines where once rested the retched remains
of a BA6 auxillary heater.  I am thinking I may bypass
a great deal of this.  Before I commit, I would like
the opinions of seasoned Vanagon owners.

1. I intend to forgo the entire duct work for the
heater since it is apparent to me that heat loss is a
major factor due to lack of insulation on the duct
work.  Instead, I would like to run ducting directly
from the heat exchanger control units to the hole
under my back bench seat.  I would attach a cable made
for a choke to the control units and mount this in the
dash.  This would operate on the same basis as an
older VW bug using only the engine fans to push the
air a few feet into the cab.

2. I would also like to forgo the flaps and control
cables for the fresh air (Floor/Defrost/Etc) system
and just gut the whole works.  I would only like to be
able to open or close the system to outside air and to
heck with where it comes out.  Since I am going to
install an A/C, my concern for the fresh air system is
only that...fresh air.  And not from whince it came.

3. In doing this, I would no longer require the NASA
designed control panel for my ventilation system and
would remove it altogether.  This is a personal
feeling, but I think this simplification is what VW
originally stood for.

Well, those are my ideas.  None have been implemented
just yet, but they are scheduled soon.  Any
suggestions, input or just plain disagreement would be
appreciated...assuming the latter included a superior
alternative. heh
