Michael, this is why I passed on the opportunity to buy a Westy and opted for an 85 GL. I camped all over the place with it in Alaska. Drove down the Alaska Hiway and camped the entire trip.Loved it.

Also at Whitehorse, Yuhon Territory in Canada, I ran into a German couple who had bought a plain vanilla (really white) Mexican built bus, based on a late 70's style. They bought it in Mexico City, and were traveling America and Canada. The van they had was a panel van with sliding door, and an inline 4-banger for power. Probably a Golf engine. They loved camping in their van. Really had it set up nice.

I'm expecting to go back up to Alaska this summer and I will camp out in my "New" 88 GL that I have purchased since this tour back south.
