I went thru this and had the broken pipe, all hoses leaking as well. I dropped the tank by putting my vanagon on a 4 point lift and using a transmission stand to raise lower and hold the tank while I replaced the grommets and hoses. make sure you have enough clamps too!

While down there might as well do the pump hoeses and filters too.

I have heard that even when the gauge reeads empty there is still gas in the tank. Ihadd it to the bottom of the red zone when I did this and didn't drain out more than a quart. Good luck Dan 86GL
