Subject: Problems removing rear brake shoe pivot

Hey I was trying to replace the rear bearings on my 1985 vanagon. I encountered a problem removing the 'brake shoe pivot'. (The V shaped thing at the bottom of the drum brake that holds the brake shoes). The two bolts came out fine but the pin that goes through to the housing was stuck. Rotating the brake shoe pivot only caused the pin to move in the housing. The bently manual seems to indicate that the pin should be part of the housing not the brake shoe pivot. I was unable to pry it off. I applied penetrating oil without success. I also tried hammering on the pin with a punch from the brake side. Still no success. I decided to seek advice rather than force the issue.

My current thought is to try heat. Any other ideas?

Any help would be appreciated. I searched the archives and could not find any problems like this. Maybe this is because I don't know the real name of the 'brake shoe pivot'.

Thanks,

Ron Maxseiner 85 Vanagon GL
