Wasn't there a 1.6 turbo diesel VW engine fitted to Golfs and Jettas around that time? Was the engine the same with the exception of the turbocharger, head, etc? Seems this would be a sound way to get a little extra oomph out of her slowness? >>

This has been addressed on the list many times. You will find tons of info on this in the archives. I personally feel it is cheaper to go out and get a new 1.9TD. I'm not too happy with my 1.6TD in it's factory guise. Not worth the trouble IMHO. The exhaust pieces int he factory installation is so large that you can fit a stock Vanagon anything exhaust pipe in it and still have room to stick your finger in there. If you are near San Francisco, you are welcome to see this vehicle in person by contacting me via me a pmail.
