I'm going to take a guess at this and tell you that there are rubber covers that are used by plumbers to cover the ends of PVC pipes at ground level. One of my rental properties has these covers that are installed with a large radiator type clamp. Look around your local hardware or plumbing supply and see if you can find one of these that will fit.
