Thanks for the great post, Frank. I am curious if there has been a consensus on the max torque that is appropriate for the Vanagon transaxle. My gut tells me that a 1.9 TDD motor would be a perfect match for my Syncro Westy, but my primary concerns would be with the noise from the diesel, adequate cooling, and the torque output overwhelming the stock trans.

BTW, there is a fellow here in Santa Barbara that has a 1.8T from an A4 installed in his Syncro Westy. I have looked at it, but not driven it (yet). Done by Corey Motors using a kit from David Marshall. It looks very nice, but required raising of the deck height, and therefore removal of the back cabinet.
