Subject: Fwd: 86vanagon GL Auto Tran: second gear brake piston udate

Here is my udate:
Thanks Frank and to the list I am back on the road!
The piston in my transmission wasn't the same as the bently 38.4. Same
part number but no circlip on piston, the end is swedged like a rivet.
When I put the piston back in I didn't get it back into the brake band
notch (which is why you have to remove the valve body).
Now where I failed the idiot test: When I pressed in the piston with a
clamp, it forced the band on to the clutch and this bent the piston. ( used
hydraulic jack seconed time and was much better and easier)
I priced pistons and caps $120-150 range for each (after pressing it
in it had pinched and gouged the piston seal where the cap fit over it and
was leary of more damage and wanted to get both). Figuring it would cost me
$300 min to get it back on road I found a used one for $260 pulled the piston
changed seals (same part number but this one has the circlip) and put it in.
Road tested it and the shift points seem to be right on and shifting
smoothly.
Question: It seems to take along time to shift from 2nd to 3rd at low
speeds around 35-3800rpm (under 35mph residential driving) Since I wasn't
paying attention before I don't know if this is a problem or me just noticing
it for the first time). Is this normal or symptoms of damage from piston
fiasco?
Question 2: I considered changing the whole transmisson but this one is
differnet and I was wondering if the list had some info on it. The dipstik
comes out of the top of the case left of the 2nd gear brake cap. Mine and
Bentley only show dip stick coming from pan.
I was told it came off a vanagon year unknown and transaxel was long
gone. Said all I needed to do was switch the pans and dipstick cap from the
old transmission and it would work.
The number is 010-321-105 . Bentley only talks about 090- for identification
(general pg 4) points to the transaxel.
Does anybody know if this is ok and possible to put it in? I plan to
keep it for a back up.
Dan
