The commonly accepted solution is to run a Quart of Marvel Mystery Oil in your crankcase (don't overfill the crank case) with your current engine oil. Run it for about 300 miles and change your oil and filter.(you need to get the engine to full operating temperatures several times). Run a half quart of Marvel Mustery oil in your gas tank with a full tank or lesser MM with a half tank etc. The Mystery oil will clean your oil passages, crankcase internally, lifters, pistons, piston tops and groves and just in general remove all of the varnish buildup that's in there. Adjust the valves after this, Bob says .060 with a feeler gauge and I say one turn after the rocker arm touches your valve stem. Either way can't hurt you engine unless the adjustment is done with TDC not correctly found and you get them too loose. After another 500 miles or so go back and set them again as sludge sometimes takes some massaging to loosen up. Once the lifters are set properly you should never need to do it again unless there is maintenance done that indicates the procedure be done again.
