I'll call this the second time around scenario.
#1. Newer models of CPU fans come with miniature two pin female plugs on
a short wire, try to get this type of fan. CPU fans fail because of
temperature and moisture and will need to be replaced.
#2. You can drill a hole anywhere in the case except the back wall and
install the tiny two pin male connector for the fan. I just cemented my
male plug with Dow Silicone. You can get the male pin receptacle from
most any old computer board that has push on jumpers, de solder it and
use it. This configuration eliminates the need for a switch since you can
plug it in when you need it.
#3. The size of the fan heat sink is important, the bigger the better up
to a limit. Mostly you want a heat sink that lets you to screw a new fan
to it as the old fans fail and need replacement.
#4. I got three years out of my first fan but had to rewire when I
installed the replacement, the little two pin plug has vastly simplified
the future replacement.
#5. If the fan is left on, it would take six months to run your battery
down so safety lights and extra monitoring devices are not of any real
value unless you're a gadget guy.
