I've owned three VW 1.8l's... 86 golf(5-speed), 85 jetta(auto), 83 rabbit with 1.8l transplant(5speed). Now own a 91 Subaru legacy 2.2l non-turbo 2WD sedan(auto). The legacy jumps off the line and knocks the pants off any of the VW's I've ever owned... throughout the shifting range. And the legacy is unduobtedly heavier than the 80's Golfs/Jettas. Don't care what the data says.
