Hi John -
Have your dealer (or whomever has it) go into ETKA, select 81 Vanagon, then
select Illustration 28, Item #1. VW # 133 133 511. It's just that the
info on ETKA as to application is WRONG from the get-go. Most counter guys
at a dealer haven't been there long enough to know from knowledgeable
experience to know otherwise.
Just for grins and chuckles, this filter originally fits:
75-79 Beetles/Super Beetles/Convertibles w/Fuel Infection
(Hence, the "133" part number prefix)
76-78 Type 2 Buses w/Fuel Infection
1979 Type 2 Buses NON CAL w/Fuel Infection
80-8? Vanagons with a Pre-Filter BEFORE the Fuel Pump. Saves wear and tear
on the Fuel Pump in the long run. My Cal 84 Westy came with one in spite
of what the late edition microfiche and current ETKA says. The original
dated (84) parts microfiche shows it as plain as day. I've seen them on
Vanagons as late as 89 models.
Here's another brand number:
WIX - #33274
I've used this brand over the years on 2 different Vanagons with no
problems. Most of the time it's an OE made one in their box. If your
FLAPS does not carry the Wix brand , have them interchange that number to
their brand they carry. Sorry, I don't have the Fram, AC, Purolator, etc.,
numbers to try (don't have my reference book at my immediate disposal right
now), I just know the Wix number by heart. (Note - Don't try this at
WalMart, Target, etc., they may give you a "blank" look, scratch their
heads, go "I dunno"). While the price may be a little bit higher
(sometimes not much either, depending on where yer shopping,) than Ron's,
after factoring in shipping (even with the list discount), it *may* cost
more. This of course doesn't apply if you're ordering a buncha other stuff
from him.
Note for those looking for the metal cannister style and can't wait to get
one from Ron, try the WIX 33161 or interchange it accordingly. It's nice
to have a bit of knowledge when sourcing something. Again, price beware,
Ron is usually much cheaper, has original Bosch (His number 251 201 511A).
I've seen this one go for as much as triple what Ron gets depending on how
far out in the boonies you get.
Just my nickel's worth
