When I was stationed in Italy all of the modern cars had a single fog light in the tailight on the left side - presumably to tell you which side to pass. There was a switch on the dash that would allow the drivers to activate the light anytime the city lights (parking lights) or the headlights were on. The light was about as bright as a brake light. It was not a beam but much like a regular brake light. The was an indicator in the dash on most cars that told you that this light was on when the headlights or city lights were on, most that I remember were green. I've always thought was it was remarkable that in this country where everyone is so concerned about our safety that vehicle regulations don't require better lighting and things like these rear fog lights. Several of the Opels (GM) that I drove also had a headlight dipper for the left light. When you had a heavy load in the back seat or the trunk, you could adjust the angle of the headlight with a 4-5 position rotary switch. Helped to not blind the oncoming traffic. Wish these were standard on this side of the ocean. Ironic that we are talking about improving the lighting on our vehicles when there is a huge aftermarket devoted to reducing effective lighting output by taping, screwing or gluing dark tinted covers over folks' headlights and taillights....
