Subject:      Erratic idle and timing
Content-Type: text/plain; charset=iso-8859-1

I recently replaced my air flow meter after conked out on me. Along with the AFM, I decided to go ahead and change out the temp II sensor. Now the idle is erratic, sometimes around 550 RPM, sometimes 750, and often as high as 1200. Sitting at a traffic light drive me nuts because I can listen to it running up and down like I have a nervous foot.

I went back through and tried adjusting timing and idle, but never got it any better. I find the Bentley difficult to performa all the steps since I don't have most of the equipment it calls for.

Whether the idle stabilizer is connected or not, the idle is the same.

The timing is another thing altogether. Another thing that threw me for a loop is I (wrongly so) assumed that the timing was like all other VW flat fours (1-2-3-4). The thing that really confused me is when I connected my timing light to the #1 lead, I couldn't find the timing mark on the pulley. By moving it to the #2 lead, I can see the mark just fine. Since I can't find anything in the Bentley about the cylinder locations, I assume that it is

front ----- 4 2 o 3 1 ----- back

o=distributor location

So, I guess I must be doing something wrong, but I can't figure it out. Since the van has always run well up to the point where the AFM finally gave out, I don't beleive that there is anything mechanically out of whack.

Any clues?
