The '63 Corvair Spyder Turbo was the first American engine I believe to
produce more than 1 hp per ci--150 hp out of 145 ci flat six.  The '65
Turbos produced 180 hp out of 164 ci.

        Yep...the original VW Scirocco ('86.5) 16v engine was 1.8L
        (~110cu.in.) rated at 134HP... 1.2HP/cu.in.
