You have the timing wrong, it is the same as a bug, 1-4-3-2, and #1 is to the right front, then #2 to the rear, #3 to the front left and #4 left rear. Hope this helps. > > The timing is another thing altogether. Another thing that threw me for a loop is I (wrongly so) assumed that the timing was like all other VW flat fours (1-2-3-4). The thing that really confused me is when I connected my timing light to the #1 lead, I couldn't find the timing mark on the pulley. By moving it to the #2 lead, I can see the mark just fine. Since I can't find anything in the Bentley about the cylinder locations, I assume that it is > > front > ----- > 4 2 > o > 3 1 > ----- > back > > o=distributor location > > So, I guess I must be doing something wrong, but I can't figure it out. Since the van has always run well up to the point where the AFM finally gave out, I don't beleive that there is anything mechanically out of whack. > > Any clues? > > -- > Brian > '85 Vanagon 7-passenger GL > __________________________________ __ > /____ ______ ____== ___________\ ___ > // | | | | \== \ \\ _____ > // | | | | \== \ \\ > file://______| |______| |______\== \__________\|______ > | - | > | | | @ |______ > _[ ____ __ _ [|][WVVW][|]_ > |__] // \\ / \ |___|____________| > `---/| () |\--------|| () |---/=)________)=o{}=={ }=={ } > _________\__//_\__//____ \__//__\__//____________ > > > > __________________________________________________________________ > Your favorite stores, helpful shopping tools and great gift ideas.
