Actually many years ago, just after I replaced the cluster with the digital clock/tach version, I added four dual color LEDs in those positions. Each LED can be illuminated in red or greed. For one of the LEDs, I monitor the fan speed (green for the low speed and red for the high speed); another LED monitors the state of the fog lights (green) and the driving lights (red). Another LED monitors the state of the refrigerator (with red for rear fan on and green for the burner on) while the last monitors the oil level in the crankcase (red for low) and low fuel level (blinking green).

Or how about that LED near the oil light that never goes on or has any sort

of symbol to it....why is it there?

I also rewired the inner light circuit, taking advantage of the freeing up of the diesel glow plug light. I always hated VW's approach to one light for turn signal flashers, so at the top of the internal cluster, the left light is for the left directional, and the right correspondingly. I kept the other light functions but added a cruise control engaged light for the other empty site. Heaven help some prospective owner of this vehicle if I get planted and SWMBO moves it on!
