Subject: water in exhaust after fresh heads installed
Content-Type: text/plain; charset="us-ascii" ; format="flowed"

Just put fresh heads onto an 87 Syncro: slight resurfacing with JB weld on head mating surface, replaced all cylinder O-rings, new piston ring set, valves lapped. Engine is running great except running very hot- I think the radiator is clogged with the corroded junk I drained out of the system at engine removal (nasty mocha colored oil/coolant mix in both the engine and water lines!) and there is coolant leaking out of the exhaust, both splattering out of the tailpipe and leaking from a couple of the joints in the collector. Also- a hissing leak-type of sound can be heard coming from the left head, but nothing is visible. The right head seems to be fine.

I'm guessing the left head may have a crack that I missed, but are there other possibilities? Poor sealant job on a head nut? could the leaking be caused by too much pressure in clogged coolant system? I'm still flushing out lots of junk so I can't tell if there are combustion gases in the water.... any other theories will be much appreciated.. Aloha-
