I used white lithium grease at one time because it was easily applied in the
aerosol form and because most mechanics seems to use it on every exterior
body joint/latch/hinge.  This lubricant did not appear to last very long.
Lately I have been using Dow-Corning brand, Molykote G-Rapid.  Obviously, it
is some form of molybdenum disulfide lubricant in an evaporating vehicle.
According the Dow, it becomes burnished into the sliding surfaces and it is
the salvation of all things mechanical.  It is a dry lube, so it does not
become charged with grit in use only to become some kind of crude and
unwanted lapping compound.
