Vanagoners,

A Vanagon owning friend stopped by tonight. He is the second owner of a '91 Westy with 113K on the clock (he purchased it in '93 with 13K on it). He really loves it and wants to keep it. His family doesn't like it and wants him to sell it.

He is having coolant problems. He took it to a mechanic I have not heard of, but supposedly the guy has some Vanagon experience. Mechanic tell him heads are cracked and he needs to have his heads replaced. Mechanic quoted him a price. He ask what he should do.

I told him that for just a little bit more money he could get a Boston Bob motor. For the little extra money he would spend, he would be getting much more peace-of-mind with a Boston Bob. I told him he couldn't go wrong either way. If he keeps the Vanagon he will have a great motor he won't have to worry about. If his family forces a sale he will have a really nice '91 Westy (very good paint, good body, etc.), no rust (we are in Texas), a Boston Bob motor (should be a very big selling point versus some unknown head replacement).

Although I told him I would go for the Boston Bob motor, I did tell him that I would bet back with him again. So, what do you think? Boston Bob motor, or just the heads?

Bruce
