<<<snip>>>...ideas/brands/models tips would be appreciated...<<<snip>>>

My front speakers are Blaupunkt RL3524. I origionally bought them in '92 to put in my '83 GTi, but they also fit my '92 Passat. I think they're 3-1/2", IIRC. Don't know if they're still available but it's worth checking. And here's how I mounted them...

The factory front door speakers are all one piece. The grills for the Blau's would interfere with the window crank and I really didn't want to mess with that. When I pulled the factory speakers, I noticed they would accept the Blau's with a little modification. I snipped the plastic around the factory speakers, removing the grill portion from actual speaker. I them took a Dremel tool and ground down the plastic on the back side of the grill where the mounting tabs on the speakers and the grill mounting holes line up. Using the factory screws, I then fit the speaker behind the grill and screwed the whole thing to the door. All four screws line up with the factory holes and there's not interference with the window crank.

HTH...
