Vanagonites:

In two articles in Autocar, dated 8/6/86, and 10/7/87, plus an article in the VW Motoring, dated Dec. 1988, the Vanagon is reported to have, as an option, a 2109cc engine with 10.1 to 1 compression ration, Bosch fuel injection, premium fuel required engine that generates 112 hp. The 1st Autocar article states that the engine generates 117 ftlbs of torque at 3200 rpm, while the second attributes it as having 128 ftlbs at 2800 rpm.

The two Autocar article were reviewing Syncro Caravelles and the other one the Vanagon in general. The pictures in the Autocar articles have the slider on the left and the driver on the right.

Source of articles - Brooklands Road Test Books, Volkswagen Bus - Camper - Van 1979 -1989.
