While accelerating gently, turn the wheel as far to each side as you can. (Best done in an empty parking lot of some big corp. on the weekend. )

If the sound is pronounced when the helm is thrown all the way over, it's CV's, for sure.

Wheel bearings go once in awhile. They generally growl regardless of steering position.

In all the Jettas, Sciroccos, Golfs I've owned, I never replaced any other front end component. They all tracked straight and true.
