You still need an adapter plate and a custom flywheel to make the VR6 to the T3 transmission. There would be no reason why this would not work with an automatic transmission.

We aren't doing any mods to the transmission - although I can see a dead Syncro transmission in about 6 months...

Does the engine mate with the Vanagon trans without adapter? Can you use auto as well as manual trans? Are you strengthening the gearbox?
