I ran a 640 mile trip from Dallas to Galveston TX last 4 day weekend. Today I ran a 290 mile trip in search of used Westfalia, found a Karman Ghia but no Westies. The fact that you can and do run for thousands of miles without event is standard. I've had six month periods that I never opened the engine compartment. My 83 Air Cooled Westy has 287K on it and I got 140 K out of my last engine and pulled it when it still had 90/90/95/75 cylinder pressure. My mileage wasn't anything to rave about, only got 18 mpg average on both trips but considering the winds I figure I was doing well.
