Karl,
The Penetrol product I use is not really for thinning paint but is an oil
base paint "conditioner". Adding a few ounces per gallon allows a longer
brush time, smoothes out brush lines and leaves an extra smooth finish when
applying paint with a airless sprayer. It's made by the Flood company and
is available by the quart or gallon in most paint stores and hardware stores
that sell paint.
Other uses listed on the back of the can include applying to Fiberglas to
restore glossy finish. One product, multiple uses. Another excellent
product for "conditioning" latex based paints is Flotrol. Same benefits as
Penetrol but keep from freezing as it will get lumpy.

My dad tried this on his black fiberglass boat (I think it was when you
recommended it a while back) and really likes it.
There are two different products with that name. One of them is a product
for thinning house paint, IIRC. Anyway, make sure you get the right one.
