A few years ago I bought a van in Virginia with one of these Euro 112 hp
hi-output engines. The engine code is different, the compression ratio is
higher and the engine requires hi-test as Sam says. The engine code and
characteristics of this engine are listed in the pocket manual that the Bus
Depot sells. The engine which has the 2.1L displacement uses the earlier FI
(Digijet) and so it doesn't have the more elaborate oil pressure system that
utilizes dual low and high RPM oil pressure sensors.
The engine seemed quite peppy during my harrowing trip from Virginia to
Boston. I later sold the engine to Boston Bob since it had a problem with
the cylinder seals that was causing exhaust leak into the coolant and the
associated problems(loss of coolant and overheating). I put a Subaru engine
into the van and have thoroughly enjoyed driving it ever since.

Vanagonites:
In two articles in Autocar, dated 8/6/86, and 10/7/87, plus an article
in the VW Motoring, dated Dec. 1988, the Vanagon is reported to have, as
an option, a 2109cc engine with 10.1 to 1 compression ration, Bosch fuel
injection, premium fuel required engine that generates 112 hp. The 1st
Autocar article states that the engine generates 117 ftlbs of torque at
3200 rpm, while the second attributes it as having 128 ftlbs at 2800 rpm.
The two Autocar article were reviewing Syncro Caravelles and the other
one the Vanagon in general. The pictures in the Autocar articles have
the slider on the left and the driver on the right.
