hi list,

I just got back from Playa del Carmen, Mexico where my wife and I were married a week ago Saturday, mainly because it was easier and cheaper than Costa Rica as I'd originally reported to the list.

The people were extremely nice, the town is beautiful and devoid of Spring Breakers, the water, snorkelling, sailing, etc. were fantastic, and there are VW's everywhere! (You'll have to excuse my naivete on this and much else, as it was my first trip out of the USA. I was surprised that all of my Spanish classes actually paid off--with my wife speaking fluently, I was able to pick up a lot and actually hold conversations by the end of the week.)

We rented a brand-new bug (the old kind) and drove to Tulum to check out the ruins. I couldn't believe how fast that little thing was, or how incredibly crazy everybody drives. There is no such thing as checking the oncoming lane before passing, apparently. Anyway the bug was great and now I want one. Just don't have the space or the spousal approval.

I saw two Air-cooled Vanagons, one orange one near perfect, and a grey one that looked as though the rust was all that was holding it together. I also saw many, many bay window busses like the one on Manolo's link, but with big, black grilles on the front. I asked our agent if we could rent one, and she looked at me like I was crazy. Apparently there's not much demand among the tourists for them...

With that grill, they're water-cooled I'm assuming, but I didn't get a chance to ask anyone what kind of motor they run in those? Out of curiosity does anyone know?
