I suggest you also read Boston Bob's article on hydraulic lifters! The valves are clearly out of adjustment and hanging open. Read the article. Back the adjusters out--2 turns will not work. Jay

With one week to go before a planned 3k trip to the Great SouthWest, I have a dilemma. Buy plane tickets and rent a car ( Boo Hoo!!!!...no Westy!!). OR try like the devil to trace/fix my problem....so help me... PLEASE ... I really want to drive the Westy. What I've done so far: '87 Westy with new engine at 90K, sitting with 157K on the odometer. After a coolant pressurization problem, I've removed the heads. Had them rebuilt by a very reliable machinist. ( Meanwhile removed the auto tranny and R/R the main seal and installed new C/V joints.) The heads went back on with the recommended copper sealant and torqued per Haynes and Boston Bob's instructions ( my Bentley has grown legs and walked off to some unknown place). Push rods centered and rockers tightened and rockers/rods adjusted with two turns but no compression on #3 and #4 cylinders. Turned engine by hand and rechecked each cylinder for valve movement and proper settings...all ok. All left side lifters appear to be over pressurized (?). By this I mean that the set screws on the rocker arms need to be turned out a lot more to break contact with the valves on this side than on #1 and #2. The push rods are all straight with no scarring. Any quick suggestions from those of you that have experience with the WBX would be GREATLY appreciated. -- Stephen Steele* Chillicothe OH '91 Caravelle "Hans" '87 Westy "Franz" '84 Westfalia "Fritz" now with my nephew '81 Diesel Rabbit "Ol' Yeller" by PO '82 Caddy VW Diesel P.U.
