Healthy source of protein, calcium and plenty of calories for hungry campers. If you buy it in huge blocks, the outer 1/4" grows a little mold... My dad used to eat those hard moldy slices when I was camping as a kid, now the dog gets a healthy source of calcium. Of course canned beans are great as well as canned soups and other canned stuff. Canned tuna, mayo or similar creamy goo lasts months until opened the first time, so buy it in small amounts that can be consumed within 4 days. Putting your tuna and Mayo on crackers instead of bread increases the shelf life of the carbohydrate portion of that meal. Last, but not least, Peanut Butter. After the WWIII nuclear holocaust, when there's nothing left alive on the planet except cockroaches and the micro-organisms in the ocean floor thermal vents, the roaches will still be eating all of the peanut butter that we've left behind. |
