I don't use it for spare tire, but I do for a bike. Yakima roof racks, older models that grip roof gutters, modified to grip the hatch edges, and mounted vertically on the hatch, works very well. Very stable and now that I have the new hatch struts, the hatch stays open wherever I put it, with the rack on it. I can give you details of modifications I did if interested. Pmail.
