Hi Peter, I caught this topic late so I missed your primary symptom. I believe you stated that you think the engine runs hot and the coolant level rises. If I'm mistaken please restate the symptoms. Since the coolant can only be contaminated with combustion gases or engine oil(manual trans), if a problem exists it must be combustion gases. You stated checks were made for CO2. I hope you meant CO. Forget about Carbon Dioxide, you need to check for Carbon Monixide. If the check for CO was negative, the cylinder heads are OK!!!!!!!!! Look elsewhere for something that can displace the engine coolant. Aside from all this, do you really have a problem? I have '86 & '91 2.1L Vanagons that run and cool properly. After a 2.1L cooling system has been opened for major repairs or a coolant change, the system is bled normally with the front wheels raised on ramps until NO bubbles appear from the radiator bleeder. Following this bleeding, the cooling system functions normally. However many miles after a successful system bleeding, if the radiator bleeder is opened, BUBBLES WILL APPEAR!!!! This is normal and NO corrective action is needed. Do you really have a problem??????
