Hi Patrick, On my last Vanagon, when I had those symptoms, I would crawl underneath and whack the end of the starter with a hammer, then it would start right up...Apparently the teeth on the flywheel get worn and the starter gets stuck in there and you have to whack it loose...Not sure if that's the best remedy, and I sure did get dirty a lot, but it worked.
