Hi,

I drive a 2.1L Syncro with full digital gauges. The "normal" coolant temp is ~191*F with the heater ON and ~196*F with the heater OFF. The full hot oil temp is usually 10-30*F higher than the coolant temp, depending on how hard the engine is working. While some will argue, the hottest coolant temp occurs at idle (not at 70 mph)due to the lack of ram air at the radiator. The hottest engine oil temp occurs at 70 mph, (not at idle)or any other high rev/load situation. When checking coolant temperature, the longer the engine idles, the hotter the test temperature will be..........

As for the rising coolant level make sure that all possible air has been bled from the system. Then have the cooling system tested using a method called(I think)"Bloc-chek". A simple hand-held device filled with a test liquid pulls atmosphere from the system expansion tank. If the liquid changes color, there are combustion gases in the cooling system.
