Hi Steve,

From your post all I can ask is when you adjusted the the rocker clearance, did you rotate the engine in the "RIGHT" direction????

As an aside, NEVER EVER perform major repairs and then leave immediately on a 3,000 mile trip! It's a recipe for real Wasserboxer disappointment! After the high level of invasive repairs you've performed, this Vanagon should be operated locally, like intensive care after major surgery. After 600 miles of trouble-free operation, change the oil, check for leaks and loose components and then hit the road!

Unfortunately (following major repairs) many Vanagons are pressed into high risk/load duty too soon and damage occurs due to poor workmanship or something as simple as a loose hose clamp.

I apoligize if I've pissed on your desired itinerary but this time-line of major repair & trip departure is a real component of the whining & lament that Vanagons have poor mechanical reliability.

Regards, John
