In cultures that have experienced adjunct poverty for many centuries it
is not un common to see all types of meats consumed.
I recall seeing a documentary on Public Television about rat catchers in
India, although the general public didn't eat rats these particular
people did.
The French and many Americans like Escargot and of course its just a
particular type of snail that is common in grape arbors at wineries.
For many years I watched Mafia type movies and saw Calamare ordered and
recently I tried some fried Calamare which is squid. It was more like
onion rings that any type of fish.
There is a rattlesnake roundup each spring in Oklahoma and a wide variety
of rattlesnake dishes is served.
Many American Indian tribes ate dog.
I know that I have eaten a fair amount of horse meat while in Europe and
never made a fuss about it.
So in my opinion: Squirrels are fuzzy tailed rats, opossums are another
form of rat and cats are fair game as well if you're starving.
Its fairly well known that slaves in America received only minimal
nutrition and almost anything from raccoons, alligators, squirrels.
beavers, opossums were all consumed as part of their survival diet.
Snakes and Monkeys are fair game in many parts of New Guinea.
