I always run Bosch oil filters which is the OEM supplier for VW in North America. I never have a oil pressure problem. There could be a few other reasons for the oil pressure 'problem' you are having. First the earlier Vanagons have only 1 oil pressure switch, a 0.3 BAR switch, your Cabriolet motor has two switches, a 0.3 BAR and a 1.8BAR, if you oil pressure light is looking for 0.3 BAR and it is connected to the 1.8 BAR sender it could take a while for the oil to reach that pressure. In my Golf TD it take about 10 seconds for 2 BAR to happen - more if it is cold out side.

I had the same problem with mine, though it was an earlier motor I swapped it for, I solved it with a better filter that has an anti-drainback valve. I've heard of folks just using the larger diesel filter..

My two cents is the "Pure One filter" from Purolator http://www.pureoil.com/ seems to do the job.

I have a diesel Westy that was swapped with a 92 cabriolet egnine. The oil pump and pan are the original from the diesel with a total of 50k miles. 50% of the time at startup it takes about 1 minute for the oil pressure light to extinguish. The other half of the time, it goes out within seconds. Is there a oil pressure checkvalve somewhere that loses the oil or prime. TIA
