I was talking to my mechanic the other day and we got onto oil. We were talking about VW vanagon diesel engines and he said he beleived the engines would get much higher milage between rebuilds if they used 'real' oil. Something about oil being taken out lower in the refining process and not using the additives to make up for what had been lost. He said the only 'true' old-fashioned motor oil was a brand made by Kendall. Seemed to make sense in some way - oil does contain lots of additives which essentially provide the viscosity extent.

He also mentioned synthetic oil and how it drains of moving parts much faster than regular oil. Said he let an racing engine (that had been run on synthetic) sit for a while and when they restarted it it seized.

...any truth in any of this?
